Community-Based Training and Referral for Infectious Disease Prevention among Eritrean Refugees in Uganda
Duration: 24 months (Pilot)
Locations: Kampala (urban refugees) + selected refugee settlements
Direct Beneficiaries: 500 Eritrean refugees + 30 trained Community Health Volunteers
Indirect Beneficiaries: Approx. 2,000 community members
Goal
To reduce morbidity and improve early detection and referral of priority infectious diseases (malaria, TB, HIV, vaccine-preventable illnesses) among Eritrean refugees through community-led health education and strengthened linkages to services.
Key Objectives
- → Train 30 Eritrean refugee peer educators/CHVs to deliver culturally appropriate infectious disease prevention, health promotion, and referral services.
- → Improve knowledge and preventive practices related to malaria, TB, HIV, and vaccine-preventable diseases among 500 Eritrean refugees.
- → Strengthen community-to-facility referral pathways, ensuring at least 80% of symptomatic individuals identified through community activities are referred for clinical assessment.
- → Increase uptake of key preventive behaviors (bed net use, vaccination awareness, timely care-seeking) by at least 30% compared to baseline.

Community-Based English Language Training for Eritrean Refugees in Uganda
Duration: 24 months (Pilot Phase)
Locations: Kampala (urban refugees) + selected refugee-hosting communities
Direct Beneficiaries: 120 Eritrean refugees (youth & adults)
Indirect Beneficiaries: Refugee households and community networks
Goal
To strengthen communication capacity, social inclusion, and self-reliance of Eritrean refugees through community-based English language training.
Key Objectives
- → Provide beginner, elementary, and intermediate English language training to Eritrean refugees.
- → Improve practical communication skills for daily life, health interactions, and workplace environments.
- → Enhance functional literacy, including reading, writing, and comprehension.
- → Increase confidence and participation of refugees in host community interactions.
- → Support youth and adults in preparing for employment, vocational training, or further education.
