Health Security in Uganda

Health Security: Protecting Lives, Ensuring Dignity

Good health is the ultimate foundation of human security. Without it, people cannot work, learn, or live free from fear and want. Yet Uganda continues to battle preventable diseases, weak health systems, and emerging threats that disproportionately affect the poor and marginalised.

FHSI’s Health Security program strengthens community health systems, improves access to essential services, and builds resilience against epidemics and everyday illnesses — ensuring every Ugandan can live a healthy, productive life.

What We Do

  • Train and equip community health workers (Village Health Teams)
  • Support immunization campaigns and maternal & child health services
  • Construct and upgrade rural health centres with solar power and WASH facilities
  • Combat malaria, HIV/AIDS, TB, and neglected tropical diseases
  • Promote sexual & reproductive health and rights, especially for adolescents
  • Strengthen disease surveillance and rapid response to outbreaks
  • Advocate for universal health coverage and increased domestic health financing

Why It Matters

Preventable diseases still kill hundreds of thousands of Ugandans every year. Maternal mortality remains high. Malaria alone claims tens of thousands of children under five. When health systems fail, poverty deepens, education suffers, and entire communities are held back.

Health security is not just about treating illness — it’s about preventing suffering, protecting livelihoods, and giving every child the chance to survive and thrive.

Strategy 50 Target

By 2050, FHSI commits to reducing preventable disease mortality by 50% across all our program areas through stronger community health systems, universal access to essential services, and resilient preparedness for epidemics — creating a Uganda where no one dies from a preventable illness.

At FHSI, health is not a privilege — it is a right. By strengthening communities and systems today, we are saving lives and building a healthier, more secure tomorrow for all Ugandans.
