Education for Human Security

Education: Unlocking Dignity and Opportunity

Education is a fundamental human right and one of the most powerful tools for breaking cycles of poverty, inequality, and insecurity. Yet millions of Ugandan children — especially girls, refugees, and those in rural areas — are denied quality learning opportunities.

FHSI integrates education across all our programs while running targeted initiatives to ensure every child can go to school safely, learn effectively, and build a future free from fear and want.

What We Do

  • Construct and rehabilitate classrooms, latrines, and water points in schools
  • Provide scholarships and learning materials for vulnerable children
  • Train teachers in child-centered, trauma-informed, and gender-sensitive pedagogy
  • Support school feeding programs using locally sourced food
  • Run accelerated learning and catch-up classes for out-of-school children
  • Promote girls’ retention through menstrual health management and safe spaces
  • Advocate for inclusive education policies for children with disabilities and refugees

Why It Matters

Over 3 million Ugandan children are out of school. Girls are disproportionately affected by early marriage, pregnancy, and domestic responsibilities. Without education, children face higher risks of exploitation, recruitment into violence, and lifelong poverty.

An educated child becomes an empowered adult who can feed their family, protect the environment, resolve conflicts peacefully, and contribute to national prosperity.

Strategy 50 Target

By 2050, FHSI aims to ensure that 100% of children in our partner communities complete primary education and at least 80% complete secondary — dramatically reducing illiteracy-driven human security threats and building a skilled, resilient generation.

At FHSI, we believe every child deserves a classroom, a teacher, and a future. Education is not just schooling — it is the foundation of human security, peace, and prosperity for Uganda.
